About this course

Interactive English Program for Continued Professional Development is a free 6 level course offered by Edraak. The program has been specifically developed with a solid appreciation and understanding towards the needs and interests of Arabic speaking learners. The program will help build English language communication skills, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

The Interactive English Program for Continued Professional Development is divided into six levels beginning from elementary to upper-intermediate level.

The Interactive English Program for Continued Professional Development is divided into six levels, each with a higher difficulty level for different age groups from elementary to upper-intermediate level. Starting with A1 Beginner Level Starter, going through A1+ Elementary Level, A2 Upper-Elementary Level, B1 Pre-Intermediate Level, and B1+ Intermediate Level, and ending with B2 Upper-Intermediate Level.

The interactive program guides learners through their journey of building their knowledge in grammar and vocabulary. The Starter level focuses on the importance of developing literacy skills by adopting a phonetic approach to learning the alphabet and encouraging learners to decode letter sounds and read words from an early stage. As learners progress, they gain more knowledge and become more proficient in English language by expanding their vocabulary and functional language.

The Interactive English program applies a 21st-century skill-based and competency-based learning approach, which allows for a more comprehensive engaging learning experience, taking into account the emotional, physical, educational and language characteristics of adult learners. These competencies include critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and creativity. The competencies and skills are also presented in the format of key performance indicators, which learners achieve upon the completion of individual units within each level. Most importantly, the program goes beyond providing video-based learning opportunities, by including interactive, independent learning inter-activities that measure learning.

The program maintains realistic expectations and outcomes for adult learners by delivering challenging content and contexts in order to provide an engaging learning experience and encourage learners to realistically acquire new knowledge and skills that can be applied both socially and academically.

After finishing all six levels, learners of this program should be able to read well, write eloquently, and speak fluently about many different subjects using a variety of language functions and structures. They should also be able to understand common conversations in English, conduct basic research, complete surveys, and be able to present their findings in front of their colleagues.

What you’ll learn

  • Write simple but extended texts on familiar topics.
  • Understand the overall meaning of extended complex texts on familiar, unfamiliar, concrete, and some abstract topics.
  • Initiate, participate in and maintain interactions on familiar and unfamiliar concrete topics.
  • Speak coherently in extended exchanges using basic repair strategies to maintain the flow of communication
  • Produce clear, detailed, extended, structured text on familiar and unfamiliar concrete topics

Syllabus

Level 1: A1 Beginner Level Starter

This level explores the basic sounds of letters and their combinations, in short, simple words, phrases, and sentences. It targets adult learners who have no or limited English.

Level 2: A1+ Elementary Level

Here, you will be able to understand and make simple instructions, questions, and guided exchanges.

Level 3: A2 Upper-Elementary Level

This level demonstrates mismatches between spelling and pronunciation, it will help you speak clearly with reasonable speed and volume. You will be able to understand the overall meaning of simple, extended texts on familiar concrete topics.

Level 4: B1 Pre-Intermediate Level

In this level, you will learn how to communicate and interact in various simple authentic contexts and a variety of simple authentic formats. You will be able to understand the overall meaning of simple, extended texts on familiar and some unfamiliar concrete topics.

Level 5: B1+ Intermediate Level

This level will teach you how to use writing and typing to communicate information and ideas clearly and correctly for specific purposes and audiences in various simple authentic contexts. You will develop and understand detailed texts on familiar and some unfamiliar concrete topics.

Level 6: B2 Upper-Intermediate Level

The exit level promotes literacy in various genres and formats which will allow you to interact with a range of topics in English language. You will be able to use a variety of language functions and structures, and understand age-appropriate documentary or dramatic films and television shows, as well as common conversations in English.

Edraak, is a massive open online course (MOOC) platform, that is an initiative of the Queen Rania Foundation (QRF). QRF is determined to ensure that the Arab world is at the forefront of educational innovation. As such, QRF has capitalized on regional Arab talent to leverage technology developed by the Harvard-MIT consortium, edX, to create the first non-profit Arabic MOOC platform. The new MOOC platform will present the Arab world with unique and vital opportunities that can be part of a necessary revolution in education and learning.

First, the platform will broadcast the best Arab professors to the region, offering original Arabic courses – developed by QRF – to further enrich Arab education. Through its partnership with edX, the platform will also give Arab learners access in Arabic to courses taught and developed at top tier institutions like HarvardX, MITX, and UC BerkelyX. All courses are delivered at no cost to the learner.

Second, QRF envisions the use of the platform to showcase Arab role models by broadcasting short online courses by practitioners and professionals from a variety of fields spanning the arts and sciences.

Finally, QRF believes that the platform will enable the Arab world to take advantage of the international interest in regional affairs to tell its own story to the world. Arab university professors and regional experts can use the platform to give courses in English about the region and its history. This will serve to inform a global audience that is interested in the region’s development.
